This Russian Otello is actually not as strange as it seems, given the natural affinity that the main players seem to have with the Italian idiom, and  are able to successfully bridge the gap between Russian and Italian.  Vladimir Atlantov assumes Otello.  Early on in his career, the voice is immense and terrifying, bringing a young Del Monaco to mind.  Galina Vishnevskaya is an alluring counterpart to his moor.  Her Desdemona has a little more heft to it than most, allowing her to bring out a defiant side to a character that can often just come across as a central casting tragic heroine.  Oleg Klyonov rounds out the cast as Iago and sings the part with ease and grace.  The sound is excellent.
