Lennox Berkeley’s operatic treatment of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz is less than dramatic, but Charles Mackerras makes a strong case for the work’s value. The cast is strong, lead by an incisive Peter Pears and the creamy voiced soprano Anna Pollack, but where Berkeley really shines is in his Britten-esque choral dances, which Mackerras and the forces of the English Opera Group give full sway. This is not perhaps an opera on anyone’s bucket list, but Mackerras practically demands attention for this ancient love story.
