It seems almost impossible to conceive of the role of Lucia being cast today with a voice like Leyla Gencer's. Sadly the role has been relegated to that of soubrette in the eyes of those who make those decisions. Leyla Gencer makes a very compelling argument as to why this role needs a soprano who can both spin Donizetti's bel canto line and then switch on a dime to deliver the kind of dramatic outbursts that one would expect from a woman who is going out of her mind. Gencer is joined by Giacinto Prandelli as Edgardo who is equally skilled at alternating between the lyric and dramatic. Oliviero de Fabritiis leads a well-paced performance. The sound is fair to good.
