Although Christa Ludwig flirted with the soprano repertoire she never officially made the switch.   Lady Macbeth was a good stepping stone for Ludwig because it highlighted one of her most prodigious gifts.  Her voice has no trouble with negotiating large leaps or runs scaling the entire stave.   Dramatically she displays a fierceness and intensity that she rarely had a chance to show.  I have to admit that I was never a great fan on Sherrill Milnes but listening to this recording it is impossible to deny that he knew a thing or two about singing.   "Pietà, rispetto, amore" in particular is extremely well sung.   The sound is very good.
