Marie Collier shines in Walton’s most ambitious opera, Troilus and Cressida. This performance captures the work before several revisions to the score were made, and it is interesting to see how Walton would streamline the piece without loosing any of its intensity. Collier’s tortured Cressida shines best in the Isolde-esque love scene with André Turp’s solid, stentorian Troilus. Her diction is consistently excellent and her piercing soprano gets a splendid showcase. John Lanigan, Otakar Kraus and Josephine Veasey shine in supporting roles.
