Edita Gruberova was uniquely suited to sing Richard Strauss’s coloratura roles, managing the vocal gymnastics with ease and soaring over the orchestra when Strauss unleashes its full power. In this performance, she manages to light up the stage whenever she is on it whether delivering shimmering high notes or unleashing the character’s wrath at Morosus. Marius Rintzler adds a pinch of dignity to the otherwise doddering Morosus and Romano Emili’s strong lyric tenor is a good match for Gruberova as her lover, Henry. The sound is excellent.
