Pros:

  • Mimi Coertse brings all the vocal goods needed to excel in the role of Daphne. Her clarion soprano conveys the youth and innocence of the title character, with still enough edge to cut through Strauss's muscular orchestration.
  • With his endless vocal reserves, Jean Cox makes for an ideal Apollo. And being the handsome man he was, I have to imagine that he was nothing short of godlike on stage. Fortunately, it is not too hard to imagine that even without the visuals, as his good looks were matched by a voice that exuded sex-appeal and virility.
  • A young Edita Gruberova gets some valuable stage-time as the first maid.

Cons:

  • None to mention
