Capriccio may not be the most dramatically substantive opera in Richard Strauss’ portfolio, but with a strong cast of singing actors assembled, Strauss’ light-hearted meditation on the relationship between words and music becomes far more than an academic exercise. Claire Watson in the role of the Countess bring understated grace, revealing the opulence of her voice with restraint and taste. Hans Günther Nöcker’s virile baritone is well suited to the role of the count and Donald Grobe and Barry MCDaniel are excellent as the rivals turned collaborators, Flamand and Olivier. The sound is very good.
