If you haven't been exposed to Shostakovich's crowning operatic achievement, this performance will certainly turn you into a lover of this dark and poignant opera.  English speakers will certainly appreciate the fact that this opera is sung in English by some of the finest singing actors of its day.  Marie Collier sings the title role.  Although her voice had great thrust, there was a fragility to her sound that makes one sympathize with Katerina, despite her crimes.  Charles Craig shows that despite his over-sized tenor he was capable of refined and delicate singing.  The sound is excellent and the diction of the singers almost always comes through.
