With dramatic voices there is usually some crossover between the Italian and German realms, but often it is clear which Fach is home base. Gré Brouwenstijn was a notable exception to this rule. She possessed a voluptuous voice with remarkable thrust, making her not just credible but exemplary whether she was singing Sieglinde or Tosca. In addition to her vocal versatility, there was an honesty that she brought to her characters that gave them a human scale allowing her, for example, to convey Tosca’s insecurities without making her seem vocally underpowered. I am very happy to present this compilation featuring Brouwenstijn in excerpts from Un Ballo in maschera, Tosca, Otello, Don Carlo, Jenufa, Fidelio, Tannhäuser, Die Walküre, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Elektra
